Bond no. 9 Washington Square

Washington Square is the next Bond no 9 fragrance on the block, named after the iconic park/square in Greenwich Village.

I'd describe this as a  slightly  sweet, smoky, rose/ floral musk perfume. It's got a great mix of notes , and  is well blended in the tradition of so many previous Bonds.

Smoky notes aren't often my thing but this one I really like. The smoke is light and tempered by some bergamot in the beginning and then rose , amber and a hint of leather. The honey note adds the sweetness( but not too much) . The drydown brings in the leather , vetiver and a touch of musk.

All that might sound strong, but it isn't. I find Washington Square to be a medium scent with medium sillage.   This makes it perfect for the fall /winter season it launches in. It will warm you up  and leave a cosy, pretty scent trail on  your favorite  sweater .

Full note list:
Italian Bergamot
Geranium
Tarragon
Purple Rose
Honey
Vintage Amber
Leather Accord
Vetiver
Musk

Washington Square is available in November and will retail at $ 230.00 for 3.4 oz, $ 170.00 for 1.7 oz and $ 95.00 for a golod pocket spray.

Rimmel Lash Accelerator Mascara

Rimmel's new Lash Accelerator is not only  a lengthening mascara but also one that strengthens and is said to help them grow longer.

Rimmel's formula for it is called GROW-LASH complex . Some of the ingredients in the complex are  Biotin, Keratin, Arganine, Vitaman H and Bamboo extract.

In their study with 41 women, Rimmel says lashes grew up to 117% longer in one month of use. After one week they saw stronger lashes .

Now I have just begun using  Lash Accelerator, so I can't say that it's grown my lashes . However, it does  nice job of lengthening. There are some I've used that lengthen more, but many that don't. This falls in the middle. It  feels very soft on , is never hard and it doesn't smudge. If it gets wet, yes it will run ( it's not waterproof)  but in the course of the day I had no smudges and I've mentioned  my major smudge issues many times.

There are 2 shades - Extreme Black and Black. I have the Extreme  but I don't find it that deep. Not as much as some, which is fine by me. To me it's simply true black.

The wand is long and the brush is  a nice size. No huge brush to deal with, it gets all the lashes pretty easily.

Rimmel Lash Accelerator will be available in October and retail is $ 9.99 ( In the UK this has already been released. )

Giveaway - Outspoken Perfume by Fergie- Signed Bottle

I have one  bottle signed by Fergie herself , of  her new fragrance from Avon - Outspoken.

Outspoken surprised me. I expected something strong   and less floral, when it's actually quite soft and more floral. Outspoken begins a  bit musky  and lightly fruity and then becomes more floral as it  dries down. The final result is tuberose, vetiver and a bit of the woods notes.

The bottle is pretty genie style done up in black glass.

If you want a shot at the signed bottle , please leave a comment  with either your email or some contact info.  The contest will run from today ( Sept. 27) thru Sunday Oct. 3rd at 11:00 PM. I will pick and announce the winner on Monday the 4th.

Good luck .

The rules:

-Winner agrees by entering ,that if they win their name and address will be given to the shipping company( Attention USA, NYC)

MAC & Disney Venomous Villains Lipglass

The lipglasses  from Venomous Villains are not only super pretty shades but I think the character graphic shows up better on the clear tubes than the solid lipstick background.

Shown are 5 of the lipglasses . From left are Devilishly Stylish, Wrong Spell, Strange Potion, Wicked Ways and Hot House.

All are beauties unlike our Villains. Hot House is not a shade I personally can wear, but it's a gorgeous  shimmer raspberry purple.  My favorite is Devilishly Stylish, a shimmery peachy pink nude. Lets face it, all are fun.

Thoughts? What are you planning to buy if any ?

Lipglass sells for $ 15.50

MAC and Disney's Venomous Villains is on counter Sept. 30.

MAC Dr. Facilier Magically Cool Liquid Powder

One of the star products in the new Venomous Villains from MAC is ,in my opinion, the Magically Cool Liquid Powder from the Dr. Facilier collection.

A brand new product it comes in 2 shades: Cajun, a light to medium  bronze and Truth and Light, a sheer gold.

The best part- it really cools.  The feeling is this refreshing burst of  smooth coolness on your skin. I  am seriously thinking about dusting on my neck and decolette as well .

The  powder itself is very fine and Cajun has a lot of pigment. It's a perfect bronzer/blush  or if you have darker skin, you can use it all over. Truth and Light  really doesn't impart much color, just a hint of brightness.  This one is great for finishing  or touch ups. Both can be used over makeup or on bare skin . MAC says they have  sheer shimmer but I don't see any in either shade. They seem more flat to me.

They blended  easily with my 187 brush, my large Clinique powder brush did a good job as well .

Venomous Villains and Dr. Facilier  are on counter Sept. 30.

Magically Cool Liquid Powder is $ 29.50

Malan Breton Spring 2011

Malan Breton always does a nice , theatrical show and this season he had not only the Chelsea symphony playing accompaniment but also dancers from the NY Ballet  on the runway dancing to Gershwin. I was looking forward to seeing it in person and  was sorry I had to miss it. I can still, however, show some of the looks .

The Gershwin was appropriate as many of the looks had a nod to the 20s/30s. Flowing, close to the body silks and lots of color. The long bright blue ( Malan's Breton Blue and a shade after my own heart) beaded skirt is a keeper as is the shiny black trench. A piece you can never go wrong with.

It was  all very elegant , tailored and red carpet ready. More celebs need to grab this line for their appearances.

Real Housewife Alex McCord closed the show in another uptown pretty blue number.

NYC Extreme Glider Lip Gloss

NYC Color has a new gloss in town. Called  Extreme Lip Glider Gloss it comes in a nicely styled  long, narrow tube.  ( Almost 5 -1/2 inches).

The gloss has good pigment  and shine . It's a little tacky/sticky but not too bad. After all it is a gloss, so some is expected. Flavor is lightly melon.

Price  is $ 2.99  and ten shades are available.  Show in my image are Chinatown Cherry and Park Ave Pink.

Tom Ford Black Orchid Collection Set

Coming soon is the LE Tom Ford Black Orchid Collection set. Featuring a solid perfume version of Black Orchid , a Tom Ford lipstick  in Black Orchid  and a nail polish inspired by the color of a black orchid.

I adore solid perfumes, so I love this set although I haven't yet seen it in person. Solids are usually stronger and last longer and Black Orchid is, well no shrinking violet ( sorry I had to) to begin with, so the the solid  form should be a powerhouse fragrance. Limited and bound to sell fast ,  you can pre-order as my friend Retrodiva did while in NYC for fashion week.

$140 is retail price and it  will be available in Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue (plus I believe Bergdorfs) stores from October to December 2010.

MAC for Jeremy Scott Spring 2011

One of my favorite makeup looks was the one at Jeremy Scott. Not for the usual reasons- it's pretty, wearable, bronzy etc. No, I loved this because it was bold,  brash and retro . It was fun and looked amazing.     Val Garland did the look for MAC. She calls the inspiration: " A collage of chaos- Marilyn Monore meets Debbie Harry at CBGBs". Seriously, you reference Debbie Harry, you've got me.

Daniella Kallmeyer with Make Up For Ever Spring 2011 Show

Daniella Kallmeyer was the first runner up on The Fashion Show. She had her first fashion week presentation earlier this week and Make Up For Ever was behind the gorgeous bronzed makeup look.

Key artist was Orlando Santiago and his inspiration was "South of France  pretty little rich girl ".  It's  very chic and sunny , yet a look that's not too planned.

Some of the products ( all are by Make Up For Ever) used to create this look were:

Face & Body foundation, Mat Bronze #6, Sculpting Kit # 10 for cheeks, Pan Cake # 3 and Diamond Cream # 7 for cheek highlights.

Eye shadow # 126 for a wash of color on eyes, inner eye lined with Concealer Pencil # 100, Faux Lash # 155 for a clumpy look, and Smoky  Lash mascara.

Rouge Artist Intense lipstick in # 38 on the lips.

I got a quick peek at one of  Kallmeyer's designs and was especially in love with the bold rose gold colored necklace.

The InStyler

Have you tried the InStyler ? I've seen it, had friends talk about wanting one, but like many people who haven't  tried it yet, wasn't really sure if I would like it.  There were many questions, now answered.

First off, it doesn't tangle hair. That was a worry.  Mine isn't super long but I tried it on the Mom who has damaged, fine hair. That's her hair in the picture and it was worked great.  I used it all over, to flatten ends, and to give body and little wavy lift to the top.  and the verdict- loved it.

What else you need to know- The InStyler gets very hot. It has 3 temperature settings and even the lowest was high heat. Flat irons are always hot, true, but this goes all the way to 385 degrees ( lowest is 285).   Use it knowing that and make sure your hair is in top condition before you heat it that hot. Really you should be doing that with any flatiron. I'ver had more than person ask me why their hair is falling out after they iron it every day. Turns out none deep condition or use a heat styling product first. Please do this. Your hair will thank you.

So the InStyler gets a thumbs up and I  am surprised I liked it that much as I was skeptical.

Have any thoughts on the InStyler ? Let me know in comments.

Heidi Klum + Pop Chips = Fashion Week

Yes that's an equation. Pop Chips equal Fashion Week.  During the many shows , backstages , etc during fashion week, often Pop Chips are your main sustenance. I kid you not. Even Heidi knows , seen  here snacking after the Project Runway show earlier this week.

Vena Cava and MAC Spring Fashion 2011

Vena Cava is always one of my favorite shows.  This season creators Sophie Buhai and Lisa Mayock were inspired by the Memphis design movement . The fabrics were flowing silks and gracefully went  down the runway. The makeup was hot , done by  Christian McCulloch  for MAC with hair by Ted Gibson and the  models looked gorgeous .

While we may be in  September, this is  great  summery look for next season. The orange lip is big for fall too though ,and it looks like it will continue into Spring.

The MAC lip and cheek products used at Vena  Cava are :
MAC lipstick in Morange and Neon Orange
MAC Mineralize Blush in Dainty

My favorite Vena Cava look was the last dress( shown).  Stunning  and the model shows the makeup perfectly.

Deborah Lippmann Waking Up In Vegas Nail Polish

Deborah Lippman's new polish Waking Up In Vegas adorned the nails of Lady Gaga on the  Vanity Fair September cover. This is one Gaga look you can get for yourself.

Waking Up  In Vegas is a pale, grey creme. To me it looks like the color of wet cement. This is my first pale grey as opposed to deeper, or steelier ones and I kind of like it. It reads very fall and is very neutral and also not anywhere near a basic .

My photo shows one coat with no top coat so you can see the polish itself.  It's a thick formula that goes on easily and will shine up nicely with a topcoat but is semi flat if you want that look.

Intelligent Nutrients Jasmine Absolute

It's not too often a fragrance comes along that  truly wows me. Many I like, some I really like and a  few wows. The newest wow- Intelligent  Nutrients Jasmine Absolute. It makes my day to smell something this good and since the company , founded by Horst Rechebacher whose previous company was Aveda, is all about aromatherapy ,relaxation and organics,  that's good.

The Jasmine Absolute  , made from Sambac Jasmine flowers, is tropical, warm, a bit ambery and rich , a full on white floral explosion that smells like being in a hothouse of jasmine. Or a field. Because this is an absolute, it stays the same ,  to drydown etc. It also stays  fairly close to the skin, but there is sillage.  An absolute also generally has the highest concentrations of pure oils.

It  doesn't have the staying power a more synthetic blend would, but that's to be expected with a pure oil version. However, it does last far longer than I expected and more than many oils I've used.   Lasting power is a trade off  but when  you get something that smells this good and is this natural  it's not bad. Many people prefer  oils and essences  .  I prefer whatever smells amazing and is well crafted. I also happen to be a jasmine fan. Now jasmine can veer into indolic or animalic territory ( you know it, it's just "off" and stinky)  and that puts some off including  me. This does not go there for the most part. A touch , but nothing to send you running.  Intelligent Nutrients say this is meant to be a soothing , refreshing scent and it is. It  has to smell good to be able to do that.

The  Jasmine Absolute rollerball bottle is .37fl ( 11ml) for $ 97.00

Maybelline's New Fit Me

Maybelline is bringing a whole new line called Fit Me to  stores  in January 2010 . Fit Me is  aimed at both new  makeup wearers as well as longtime users. The idea  here is shade matching  and true shades. The line is powder, foundation, concealer, blush and bronzer.  All are coordinated so there is a shade match across  product categories and powder and foundations will both have the same product number.

According to WWD ,  Maybelline  is using " skin merge technology". which is a patented formula to match skin tone and blend easily.

The foundations and powders will be available in  18 lightest to darkest shades, and will retail for $7.99 each. Concealers come in six shades and retail for $6.49 each. Blush and bronzer will retail for $5.51.

*** Ed. note - full review finally up here  as of Jan. 27

SkinMedica Environmental Defense Sunscreen SPF 50+

It's Labor Day weekend and what many ( not me) consider the end of summer. There is plenty of summer left although with no more heatwaves hopefully.  Cool summer days sound good.

So with the sun still out , and it's there all year, we still need sunscreen right ? I tried a new one to me , SkinMedica Environmental Defense Sunscreen SPF 50+ with UV ProPlex™ recently.  What I liked with this is it has chemical and physical blocks , so you are covered both ways. Plus the antioxidant protection.

The cream is not too heavy and holds up pretty well in water. Because it has zinc oxide it does have a bit of a white cast at first, you just need to blend well. I've used this for outside days and liked it but haven't tried it under makeup. It's lightly moisturizing, but you may still need your regular moisturizer if you tend to be less oily.

More info per the company:

SkinMedica Environmental Defense Sunscreen SPF 50+  includes advanced, patented three-layer UV ProPlex™ technology to improve product performance by effecting a more uniform distribution of UV filters on the skin. UV ProPlex helps improve the distribution of sunscreen actives more effectively so 25-30% less actives are used. Protects the skin with significantly fewer chemicals.

SkinMedica provides:
1. physical protection preventing UVA/UVB rays from entering the skin

2. chemical protection preventing UVA/UVB rays entering the skin

3. biological protection using potent antioxidants, including green tea, caffeine and vitamin E combined with novel antioxidant picea excelsa to strengthen skins natural defense and fight off free radicals

It's listed as  a  highly water resistant full-spectrum UVA/UVB defense sunscreen  that is oil free, fragrance-free and PABA-free.

$ 45.00 for 3 oz
