Mario Badescu Home & Away Kit for Nordstrom Beauty Sale

The Nordstrom Anniversary sale ends Aug 1st .  There were many great items and I haven't highlighted nearly enough. But in the last minute(s) I had to tell you about this Mario Badescu kit in case you haven't noticed it.

Called the Home and Away Kit, it's big claim to fame as far as I'm concerned is that it  has a Drying Lotion in a plastic bottle. And it's full size  not a mini. PERFECTION. Badescu Drying Lotion is one of the greatest acne zapping products ever ( 1st post on it from 2007 here) and when I have to take a trip I always wrestle with taking my glass bottle or taking some other product and hoping a huge zit doesn't happen. This kit takes that problem right out of your hands. A large and small Acne Cleanser rounds out the kit. All you need to take it on the road and blast acne at home.

The 'Home' set includes a full-size Acne Facial Cleanser (6 oz.) and full size glass bottle of the Drying Lotion (1 oz.). The 'Away' set contains a carry-on approved, travel-size Acne Facial Cleanser (2 oz.) and a full-size Drying Lotion (1 oz.) in a travel-friendly plastic bottle.

Chanel Illusion D'Ombre Eyeshadow

Illusion D'Ombre is new type of shadow from Chanel. It's a cream to powder basically ,but it's not quite basic.

The texture in the pot is almost spongy and the shadow is very creamy. It blends really well on the eye and dries down fast.  The packaging says "Long Wear" and I have to say it wore  pretty well on me (using a base) and cream shadows rarely do. So if it wore  ok on me, then most of you will find it wears really well.

On the eye it's very shimmery, which I happen to love. The shade Emerveille shown at top is a light peach and really opens and brighten the eyes.

Illusoire is a deep purple which shows in the photo of the product but the swatch looks more smoky . The color in the pot is the color that ends up on eyes. It's more purple/plum than smoky  and goes on deep but not goth dark.
Silly thing, but I  love the little brush that comes with it. The brush works fine with the shadow , but I find using my fingers still works best for me.  I love the brush mainly because it's cute and small and says Chanel.

This is the shadow that was debuted at the brands Fall/Winter show in February. The model shown, who looks amazing, is wearing the charcoal shade I beleive.

On counters now  at Chanel in six shades.  $ 36.00

Chanel Peridot Nail Lacquer

Chanel Peridot has been getting all the nail buzz for months. I know I've been waiting to try it and now that I have -I can say it is all that  . It's  beautiful nail polish that flashes green and  gold  and is highly metallic.

The formula is a bit thick but it still goes on well.  Image is 2 coats over base coat, no top coat.   As I said it flashes green and gold and I get plenty of green in certain lights , bright light seems to make it more molten gold.   I did use flash in the top picture  and that one shows the green side more.  But the flash image of the bottle is all gold . Non -flash image shows some of the green.  Definitely a duochrome shade here.

Peridot will make a great fall color but I am wearing it now.  The shade is  good for summer as well and will make a fabulous pedi shade. It begs to be shown off in sandals.

On counters now. $ 25.00

MAC Opulash Optimum Black

Opulash is my favorite MAC mascara. Mostly because it lasts-and lasts and lasts. 8AM  to Midnight and it will never run or smudge on me ( rarer than seeing a meteor shower).  It also does a good job of lengthening and volumizing.

Now there is Opulash Optimum Black. What's the difference ? First up the formula.  The original Opulash was a thick formula and needed wiping before using and sometimes gave me clumps.   New Optimum Black seems to be just a little bit thinner  and therefore goes on much easier right out of the tube. It defines lashes better, adds some curl and I think is giving me more length and volume. It still has the all day wear  thanks to  a "blend of silica plates of mica and natural kaolin to thicken and grab each lash " and the wand/brush seems to be the same as the original. The shade of black is also the same very deep black .

Verdict- The new Opulash Optimum Black is even better than Opulash. If you liked the former,  you might need to try the latter.

On counter August 25 and permanent .

Givenchy New- Ange ou Demon le Secret Elixir

Givenchy will release in August the next installment in the Ange ou Demon line - Ange ou Demon le Secret Elixir.

This is a an EDP Intense and it does have solid lasting power and nice light sillage.

It begins with lemon right off at the top , green tea and then the jasmine comes in with a slightly menthol bent that could also be the neroli but that fades fast and the fragrance becomes more and more floral until the drydown brings in the cedarwood note most predominately to my nose with a touch of vanilla

Ange ou Demon le Secret Elixir is sweet but not candy sweet and I freely admit I like sweet fragrances sometimes. Not all of them but I liked this one at first sniff. I think it was the citrus top that grabbed me. If it's citrus, it's me. The overall scent though is definitely floral and softly pretty .

Top Notes: Italian lemon, green tea and neroli

Heart Notes: Sambac jasmine, orange blossom and frangipani flower

Base Notes: Vanilla, patchouli, cedar wood and white musk

Ange ou Demon le Secret Elixir will be available in August at Macy’s, Dillards, Lord & Taylor and Sephora .

30ml Eau de Parfum - $56.50
50ml Eau de Parfum - $80.50
100ml Eau de Parfum - $99.00

Ormonde Jayne- A Personalized Visit in London

This Spring  my good friend Mark went to London for the first time.  Not only did he get to see many of the amazing sites London has to offer but being a perfume aficionado of the highest order , he also  looked  into the unique to London shops. Here he shares his personalized visit  to   Ormonde Jayne , home of some truly beautiful perfumes.

An American in London: Ormonde Jayne, Sloane Square.

In the Spring of 2011, I traveled to London with a list of perfume destinations that I would not forgive myself if I didn’t visit. At the top of that list was the exclusive London Perfumery of Ormonde Jayne. For an American, there are few perfume houses left in the world whose treasures are unobtainable on our own soil, but Ormonde Jayne, established by perfumer Linda Pilkington in 2002, is one of them. It was with great excitement that I arrived one Sunday afternoon at the Slone Square boutique in the heart of Chelsea on time for my scheduled Perfume Portrait with the store manager, Monica.

The Ormonde Jayne boutiques are luxuriously contemporary and refined jewel boxes that house some of the best fragrances that English Perfumery has to offer. While other renowned English perfume houses such as Penhaligons and Floris have had many decades to establish themselves, (with several Royal warrants to help), Ormonde Jayne has already established itself with exceptional renown and has done so in only 9 years. Once inside, it was not difficult for me to understand why – the attention to detail could be found in abundance throughout the space, from the jet black abstract display shelves holding everything from ancillary products and candles to the perfumes in the brand’s signature pumpkin orange packaging.

I brought along my dear American friend and current London resident, Deirdre to the appointment and we were invited to sit at a desk to begin my Perfume Portrait. This service is for someone relatively unfamiliar with the range of 12 scents that Ormonde Jayne offers, but I wanted the true Ormonde Jayne immersion experience, even though I was already familiar with several of the scents. Monica served us jasmine tea and chocolate truffles and I was asked to fill out a questionnaire as to which fragrance families and notes that I knew I already enjoyed. It was not surprising to me that once I was finished with the questionnaire, that I realized I had checked every single box on the form. I silently hoped Monica knew what she was getting herself into.

Monica began the Perfume Portrait by placing a tray in front of me that contained black glazed porcelain squares labeled with individual raw materials that recurred in many of the fragrances in the range. These porcelain squares were constructed like stoppers with the bottoms infused with each individual scent. She started with the lightest and the brightest such as rose, lavender, and osmanthus and she ended with the heaviest and the darkest - tolu balsam, cedar, and hemlock oil, which adhered to the stopper like a resinous glue. After introducing each raw material, she would ask if I liked it. The problem for a perfume enthusiast such as myself is that even if I didn’t personally enjoy them, I still respected them and recognized their importance to the greater picture and so I ended up telling Monica that I enjoyed them all. Remember – the goal of the Perfume Portrait is that at the end, the administrator is supposed to be able to suggest the perfect fragrance for you. In my case, I told her upfront that I would inevitably like everything. And true to my word – I did.

I was very much intrigued by the Hemlock Oil. I knew that it was somewhat of a signature ingredient in many of Linda Pilkington’s creations and I wanted to know more about it. Monica told me that when Linda started using it, it was seldom seen in modern perfumery. The oil itself is a thick, tar-like sap that comes from the bottom of the Hemlock as opposed to the top, which is poisonous. To smell it alone, outside of the perfumes was an amazing experience. I was transported to a wet forest in autumn; the peat and the soil of the earth were very much detectable against the semi-sweet woodiness of the plant, itself. Like so many raw materials, one sniff entered the mind into a complex world filled with layers of scents that can only happen with the finest of natural ingredients. I am not a natural perfumery purist, by any means. I recognize the gift that synthetic ingredients bring to the table when they are paired with high quality naturals, but smelling Hemlock oil was like kneeling at the altar of Mother Earth.

Monica moved on to the range of Linda’s 12 fragrances. Osmanthus was the first scent that she had me smell and it was appropriate as it was also the very first perfume that Linda Pilkington launched after she had great success with her candles. We moved through the entire line and to no one’s surprise – I liked all of them. Monica then led me on a short tour of the boutique, introducing me to the exceptional candles and bath and body products. She paused on the dusting powder made from 24-carat gold flakes and housed in a heavy black glass jar with a swiveling gold plated lid that revealed a gracious feather puff inside. Priced at well over $500, it is the most luxurious product that Ormonde Jayne sells and because this is, after all, a Haute Parfumerie, it is infused with the fragrance of one of their best-selling fragrances, Orris Noir. Deirdre held her composure, but deep down, I knew she was completely enthralled, now. Truth be told – so was I. In the privacy of my own home, I would rather enjoy dusting myself down with solid gold and frankly, I wouldn’t believe anyone, male or female, who said that it wouldn’t thrill them to cover themselves with gold, as well. Meanwhile, I reminded myself that I was there for perfume.

In the center of the boutique is a stand that houses the perfumes and more black porcelain stoppers. This is the preferred way that Ormonde Jayne lets guests smell their fragrances and is probably one of the most effective presentations that I have come across. The “stopper” on the underside of the square is left unglazed and really soaks up the scent. When you turn it over and bring it to your nose, you experience the perfume in its longest phase – the drydown. It is the most accurate representation of the Perfumer’s vision for the fragrance and allows the buyer to get a truer sense of what it is they are sampling before the ultimate skin test.

The appointment came to an end and I thanked Monica for her time and for the amazingly informative Perfume Portrait. Like any good American, I then pulled out my credit card and asked for 3 bottles. I decided to buy a bottle of Ta’If - a glorious rose fragrance and their best seller; Zizan – a fantastic dry, woody vetiver concoction which was designed by Linda Pilkington as the answer to dozens of interviews with men as to what they would want their ultimate cologne to smell like; and Ormonde Man - the signature men’s fragrance that centers around one of my new favorite ingredients – Hemlock.

I bid Monica farewell and gleefully skipped towards the Picadilly line Tube station with my purchases in hand, beautifully packaged and my best friend Deirdre, covered in Gold and shimmering in the London sun. Yes, sun.

Shalimar Parfum Initial

My first thought on Shalimar Parfum Initial- Stunning. That word sums it all up. Any update on inconic scent like Shalimar worries. And full disclosure, even though I admire the genius of Shalimar and am mad crazy for all things Guerlain, the original is not a favorite of mine. Just simply not me ( I'm not much for  vanilla ). Not so for Parfum Initial . This I love .

Shalimar Parfum Initial is a truly feminine scent,  not girly , but not so sophisticated as to be above it all. It has great sillage and lasting power and makes me want  to sniff my wrists all day.

It's Rose and Iris in the beginning with a  nice big hit of the Iris-powder and root.  There's a a little of the original's  Vanilla,  and then  lots of Tonka  at the drydown, which brings in the legendary "Guerlainade" that marks Guerlain fragrances  as their own.   Parfum Initial blessedly keeps the Iris note all along giving it a slightly dry and powdery feel  of softness at the drydown .

Shalimar Parfum Initial is available now at  Neiman Marcus and Saks  for 2 oz at $84.00 and 1 oz at $ 67.00

L'Oreal The One Sweep Blush- Part 2

When I first posted about these a reader asked for more info, so here we go.

These are the new duo Studio Secrets One Sweep blushes from L'Oreal . Meant to  color and contour all at once they come with  a wide brush that actually does work. It picks up both colors and applies them pretty well. I am a brush person, meaning good professional style brushes,  so I ended up using my contour and blush brushes and did get better results. They picked up more pigment .

Speaking of pigment, the colors look bright in the pan but are semi- sheer on. They  look soft and not as bright as  you might think. The pink shade in the Poppy duo has more color on than the peach in the Nectar duo shown.

One nice feature is in the packaging- a large mirror in the lid above the brush. Makes for a perfect blush to carry with you for  touch ups.

The One Sweep Blush should be  in stores now in 4 shades.

L'Oreal Age Perfect Golden Balm Eye Cream

In the past as much as I have liked many L'Oreal cosmetics (mainly foundation and mascara ) I never really went for any of their skincare.  New this month  are two products called Golden Balms. When I tried the Golden Balm for eyes, I went for it in a big way.

Part of the Age Perfect group, Golden Balm for eyes is an incredibly creamy and soothing eye cream. It's like butter for your eyes. Just the kind I like for my dry  eye area, especially  for nightime use. A little goes a long way and it sinks into skin  but is very moisturizing . The moisture lasts  too.

Now  the packaging says it for "mature" and  thinning skin . I am neither of those ( Age Perfect is  their more mature over 50 line) . When it comes to  eye cream , the richer the better no matter what the supposed age range is. Now the corresponding face cream Golden Balm would be way too much for my face but  it's is also another super creamy, smooth cream.  In other words, use what works for you.

So bottom line, for the first time I am really impressed with a L'Oreal skincare product.

Golden Balm uses many essential oils  including Apricot Kernel Oil, Rice Bran Oil and Passionfruit Seed Oil .

It also has Shea Butter ,  Calcium  and Caffiene and is meant to not only moisturize but de-puff  and help with circles.

L'Oreal Age Perfect Golden Balm Eye Cream is available now and retail is $ 19.99

Talbots Fall/Holiday Preview 2011

Yesterday I got a look at what's coming for fall and holiday from Talbots. There were so many pretty and simply perfect items.  What I fell most in love with ,but didn't snap a picture of,  was a leopard print trench coat. It's a muted leopard, not quite as bold as some which makes it all the more wearable.  That went to the top of my wish list.

There are lots of brights- pink, green and royal blue, as well as sequin evening pieces, incredibly cozy looking sweaters and slightly rugged leather bags . Different than we usually see at Talbots but oh so nice  and there is new loungewear as well. The grey lounge vest shown is  second on my wish list . I can envision wearing that all fall into winter with a good book in my hand next to the fireplace.

I have a few price points on what's pictured but not all. These items will be in stores this fall and  holiday season so make a note to look for them then.

Felt Handbag Tote - $ 99.00 ( Comes in several colors)

Leopard print weekly planner - $ 69.00 ( iPad  and iPhone cases also available)

Houndstooth Ball Skirt - $ 199.00

Miss Dior Cherie Blooming Bouquet

Miss Dior Cherie Blooming Bouquet is a Nordstrom exclusive new Dior fragrance.

Blooming Bouquet , as one would imagine,  is a floral. It's a soft, pretty  floral with notes of peony  and rose at the top, along with a little citrus zip (sicilian mandarin essence) that works it's way into  a sparkling slightly powdery floral by the drydown. Bottom notes are white musks and patchouli but to my nose they play  but a small part in this bouquet.

It is very pretty and easily wearable anytime. It's sweet and feminine but more than simply a fruity floral scent.

Of all the Miss Dior Cheries , I think this is my favorite.

Available ay Nordstrom during the Anniversary sale that begins on July 15. It's LE and  $64.00  for 1.7oz EDT Spray

MAC Colourizations Double Feature Eye Duos

Colourizations are pocket sized duos of contrasting eyeshadows. The compact measures 3" x 1  1/2 ". There are 8 colorways called Double Features .  I have to say I think some of the pairings are a bit odd, but if you want something a little different than these might be for you. Also they don't have to be used together if you happen to like both shades but not at once . The green/teal shadows are especially nice as is the darker shade in Double Feature 5 which is dark brown with green pearl . I've numbered each for reference.

These will be on counter August 4th and will sell for 25.00.Nordstrom and The Bay get them first.

The Body Shop Body Butter Duos

The Body Shop Body Butters just got one better. They're now a duo.  Four new scents come in a double sided ying/yang pot with one side for normal skin, the other dry skin. The normal skin side is a thinner lotion and the dry skin side is more of the butter like consistency. Scents are : Vanilla, Macadamia, Acai and Sweet Pea.

The Acai is called floral acai  and is  rich but not sweet berry but with a hint of something else. It's lovely .

For the launch The Body Shop is hosting a contest on their Facebook page www.facebook.com/TheBodyShop where  they are giving away one every day.

Body Butter Duos are currently introductory priced at $ 15.00 or two for $25.00

Bumble and bumble Shine Collection

Bumble and bumble has done it again with their new Shine collection, a trio of perfect hair  products that I am loving and loving.

The sun started to dull my hair a bit and  I had never used much in the way of shine products before. When I saw that Bb. had a new Shine line,  I was ready to give it a test run . I haven't stopped using it since.

The Let It Shine  shampoo lathers a lot and really cleans. As in you can go twice as long between shampoos with this than any other shampoo I've ever used. Hair is full, soft and light .  The  Let It Shine conditioner is a medium one.  Both shampoo and conditioner use sunflower oil for moisture. If you have really dry hair then you might want to stick with Bumble's Super Rich conditioner, which is  dry hair's friend. Those with normal hair can use Shine just fine.

After using both shampoo and conditioner my hair looks great. Is it  way shinier? Well no. But it is shinier than it was. And it's helping keep it that way .

The Shine On  Spray is also light and a few quick sprays are a nice pick me up for hair. It's  lightweight silicone formula. Product can get  greasy on me fast and this never does. You can't even tell it's in there. It's just a  mist that boosts brilliance and smoothes hair down a bit.

Bb. Shine  is available now at http://www.bumbleandbumble.com/ and anywhere Bb is sold.
