Juliette Has A Gun Mad Madame

Mad Madame is a rose fragrance but a very modern rose. It's a spicy, amber rose  , one that's soft but is also strong. The main rose note is Rose Oxyde and is said to be metallic but it doesn't seem overly so to me. It also has some qualities of a chypre.

This is not a shy fragrance . There are other florals in there but they are light with the peony note coming out a bit.  As it dries down the patchouli is there along with the moss but by the full drydown I  am still getting mostly that soft , spicy rose with subtle hints of other notes , and at that time it seems more metallic and dry than in the beginning.

Overall it's very pretty , especially if like me, you like rose scents.  It also becomes less strong as it dries and settles into a feminine but not girly fragrance.

Full Note List :

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder

Powders seem to be  taking center stage this year, or at  least this season.  Add to the list a new one from Hourglass

Called Ambient Lighting Powder , there are 6 varieties , each to mimic light effects on your skin.

I tried Diffused Light, liking the idea of brightening and softness. Even though I don't have that much redness.  Diffused Light is a pale yellow and yellow  in makeup  is often  used to combat redness as well as  sallowness.  It was hard to choose. They all sound nice.

This is a very finely milled powder that goes on sheer and light. You can tell you have powdered, but there is nothing heavy here. It's airy.  Diffused Light helped to keep shine down and warm things up just a bit. There is no shimmer that I can detect, but I don't know if that's true for all colors.

The powders come in a typically elegant Hourglass Compact and they are
free of parabens, talc, fragrance, nano-particles and gluten.

Ambient Light Powder shades:

DIFFUSED LIGHT: A soft, warm, pale yellow powder. Light your skin with Diffused Light to reduce redness and give skin clarity – like a soft ray of morning light.

ETHEREAL LIGHT: An opalescent sheer, cool white powder. Light your skin with Ethereal Light to mimic a moonlit glow – even in broad daylight.

RADIANT LIGHT: A sun-kissed golden beige powder. Light your skin with Radiant Light to extend a summer glow, or enhance the overall complexion with believable, subtle, warmth.

MOOD LIGHT: A soft, sheer lavender pink powder. Light your skin with Mood Light to mimic the softest most forgiving light and reveal your brightest complexion.

DIM LIGHT: A neutral peach beige powder. Light your skin with Dim Light to blur imperfections and highlight a radiant complexion with the perfect balance of warm and cool tones.

LUMINOUS LIGHT: A champagne pearl powder. Light your skin with Luminous Light to create a soft, incandescent candlelit glow – day or night.

Ambient Powder Brush also available with extra soft, high-grade taklon bristles and packaged with a protective travel pouch.

$45 for each powder, $35 for the brush.

Currently on Sephora .com, in stores Mid February.

Banana Republic W & M Fragrances Are Back

Ready to head back to the '90s?   Banana Republic is re-releasing W for women along with M for men, scents that originally debuted in the mid '90s and were quite popular as I recall.

W is a light , green and fresh scent with a little citrus at the top  and  musks  at the drydown. It's almost a skinscent, very clean smelling  and one for those who like lighter fragrances .

M is my favorite of the two .  It's also fresh but more citrus-y with bergamot at the top and getting more green  as it goes,  along with sandalwood and white musk notes . It's a very refreshing scent and easily unisex.

 W  and M are $ 48 each

MAC Pro Longwear Paint Pots

Paint Pots remain one of my all time fav MAC products. Mainly because of their longevity on the eye. That's key for me. But the ease of use, swipe and go  is a big factor too . Since their initial release years ago we've seen many brands launch their own versions of cream pot shadows. Some good , some so so.

Now MAC is bringing Paint Pots back in Pro Longwear .  Is the formula a lot different, I don't know. I should be testing them soon. MAC does say they are  now "in a rich, creamy formula that dries with a vibrant intensity, delivering illuminating dimension and a lustrous pearlized finish. " Either way , I still love these . All the shades are previous releases but I see some I don't have like Frozen Violet that I need. I don't have a purple Paint Pot  , how is that ?
Frozen Violet

Paint Pots as I said, if you haven't tried them, are very long lasting, and they make a great base as well. I use older Bare Study as a base a lot . For the deeper shades, it's easy to just blend across the lid for full color look and head out the door . You can use a brush, but fingers work fine , if less sanitary.

These will be in the permanent line on February 7th.

MAC Pro Longwear Paint Pot colors:

-Chilled On Ice- Frosted white gold
-Let’s Skate! -Pale pink with pearl
-Vintage Selection- Frosted dirty peach
-Let Me Pop -Frosted light copper
-Frozen Violet- Frosted purple silver
-Blackground -Black grey with multicolour
-Antique Diamond- Frosted olive silver
-Dangerous Cuvée- Frosted cool grey

Kiehl's Powerful Wrinkle Reducing Cream

With the bulk of the US and a great deal of Europe in a deep freeze, it's a good time to talk ultra moisturizing creams.

Kiehl's made one of the great dry skin creams last year with Rosa Arctica. Now they have another in Powerful Wrinkle Reducing Cream.

This new formula utilizes Copper PCA  for skin health . The cream is said to firm, help restore elasticity and reduce fine lines . Copper especially works on elasticity  and along with the copper there is  Calcium PCA   and  Apricot Seed Oil and Shea Butter provide  hydration.

This is a very thick  cream  and packs a lot of moisture   I think  more moisture than I need, but if you want anti-aging alongside super hydration  this might be what you need. As an eye cream , it's amazingly good  on the eye area ( Yes, I dab it around the lower eye are occasionally, but there is an actual eye cream. ).

The  skin cream  is comfort for the skin  and very luxe feeling . It's heavy but doesn't take too long to sink in . Skin feels moisturized and a little plumped immediately . I can't attest to wrinkle reduction since I thankfully don't have a lot, and I haven't used it long enough to see those kind of results. I can say it's lovely to use and I am all for anything that helps bolster skin .

There are two versions of  Powerful Wrinkle Reducing Cream , one with SPF 30 and one without along with an eye cream.

Kiehl's Powerful Wrinkle Reducing Cream with or without SPF 30 is $ 52 for 50ml
Kiehl's Powerful Wrinkle Reducing Eye  Cream $ 42 for 14ml

Head over to www.kiehls.com for more info  on ingredients , etc.

L'Oreal Sublime Sun Sheer Protect Sunscreen Oils

Yes I know it's January and not usually the time we devote  to thinking about SPF. But  some people go on vacations this time of year , cruises , the Bahamas, and if you do and you're nice and pale from winter, then you will need plenty of SPF. And summer will be here in in 4 months or so if you want to get a head start .

So while it's an odd time for SPF, it's worth noting that L'Oreal has some  additions to it's Sublime Sun line. Remember the days of Hawaiian Tropic Tanning Oil ? With no SPF basically ? Well  if you love(d) tanning oils , now you can get them and SPF 50 together.

These are almost a dry oil.  They go on lightly with a slight floral scent and add  moisture with sunflower seed oil and shea butter in the ingredients .  Within a half hour or less they dry down to a barely there feel and skin feels soft but not greasy.

The new Sublime Sun Oils come in 3 SPFs of 15, 30 and 50 using  chemical blockers .

Also new to Sublime Sun will be Light Foaming Lotions/Mousse which sounds like a nice formula and good for blending into skin well.

Sublime Sun Sheer Protect Sunscreen Oils are $ 9.99 for SPF 15  and $ 10.99 for SPFs 30 & 50.

Stila Stay All Day 10 in 1 Beauty Balms- Bronzing & Illuminating

Stila has one of the best BB/Beauty Balms of those I've tried.  Their original one is Stay All Day Beauty 10 in 1 Balm and it's very good.  Nice  coverage, lightly moisturizing, it smoothes a little, perfects a little as well as having peptides for skin.

To build on the line and the goodness of the original they now have 3 new versions  -   Stay All Day HD with SPF 30 , the only thing the original one was missing , as well as Illuminating and Bronzing.

I'm all for something that gives me a little color and mixing bronzer into a BB sounds like a great idea. I also don't mind a little illumination, who does? And I have had luck with illuminating primers in the past.

The Stay All Day Bronzing BB is dark when you first squeeze it out as you can see. In the next pic you'll see it blends down pretty well. It definitely gives me a little color and I mainly use it under my makeup. I like a bit of color and I think it's just right on me. I'm pale but not uber pale  and this gives me a nice warm up but it's not in your face noticeable.  I think if you're unsure the best thing would be to grab a sample if Sephora will indulge and try it out. Also, I know many darker skinned ladies have lamented the lack of dark BBs. This might work for them.

The Illuminating BB is quite light and is shown to the left of the bronzing one. This one  has very little color and works on all light skins. The illumination is minimal. It just brightens a tiny bit , wakes up your skin and will not make you shimmer or shine . It's become a fav right now , again under my makeup as a  little boost.

The SPF is 30 in each and is broad spectrum  with both chemical and physical sunscreen.

$ 38 each and exclusive currently to  Sephora

Elie Saab Le Parfum Purse Spray Collection

It's wonderful when you see something new and the packaging just wows you.  Especially when it's not something new but new packaging. That they went to the trouble to make it special . Because while packaging might not be the  biggest thing , it's what in it that comes first , it does/can make a huge difference.

That's the case with the new Purse Spray  from Elie Saab. I took it out  of the box and thought, oh pretty atomizer. Then I wanted to open it and realized it  twists up to get the sprayer. LOVE. It's like a  big lipstick case . And so very chic.

I  am a big fan of the Elie Saab scents and while I prefer the EDP best , the EDT is good as well and this new travel set. comes in both, I have the EDT here . You get the fab main case spray and 2 refills with both.  One full fill is already in the atomizer.

It's good to note too, that even though this looks heavy, it isn't at all. So it really could go in your purse without weighing it down a lot.  Whenever you pull this out to spritz, you'll feel a little more glam .

If you want to know more about the scent of Elie Saab  the EDT  post is here
and the EDP one here .

Available now at Nordstrom , Saks , Neimans and Bloomies,

Each refill is  20 ml and the set is $ 78 for the EDT, $ 94 for the EDP with refills only available as well.

L'Oreal Advanced Haircare Total Repair 5

It's great to see mass market brands doing more and more lines to help damaged hair.

Like the lady I recently advised on haircare who works at the post office . She  asked me what to use for her dry/frizzy hair, and admitted what she used probably made the problem worse.  I run into this a lot. What was she using? Dollar store shampoo ? She  didn't say what , but yeesh. As I told her there are so many good choices out there now at good price points.

New to the shelves is the Advanced Haircare line from L'Oreal. There are 5 mini lines including treatment products to address problems with hair- dryness, breakage, color care and more. They all use Arginine K complex, an amino acid  for hair health .

Total Repair 5 is  Restoring for hair that needs strengthened, has split ends, is dull and needs moisture. While I don't fit all those , I do need a little more care in my hair than I used too and I have been having some  breakage.

Using both the shampoo and conditioner gave me very soft but not limp hair. It had loads of body and actually seemed a bit thicker.  I could see where with continued use , hair would be whipped into better shape. You only need a  small amount of the shampoo , less than I usually use .

Total Repair 5 also has a Multi Restorative Dry Oil Spray and Damage Erasing Balm.  I love dry oils for body but was wary on hair. No oil on my hair in general but this is super dry and when I used it on a couple drier spots it soaked right in with no greasy look.

The full L'Oreal Advanced Haircare line is in stores now.

Shampoo/Conditioner is $ 4.99 for 12 .6 oz
Treatment prices are $ 6.99 each, varying sizes

The Minimergency Kit

The Minimergency kit came on my radar more than a year ago at a fashion week.  At that time they were not widely available  and the brand was new to me as it was to most if not all I am sure.  I thought and still think the kit was  cute and a neat idea.  After spying them in Sephora last month I was reminded of them  .

If you haven't seen it , the Minimergency kit is a tiny, and I mean tiny, bag filled with the essential things you might need  in a pinch.  In fact the company recently changed it's name from Ms. & Mrs. To Pinch Provisions.

The kit has things like pain reliever, tissues, stain remover, deodorant towelettes , breath freshener, sewing kit, double sided tape, earring backs.  There are several varieties and you can order some of the items as refills.

I originally thought of these a a stocking stuffer post, but that was in December but I also thought though they would be adorable and timely bridesmaids gifts and it turns out on the company website they have special bridesmaids ones.

My kit measures  3 inches long and easily tucks into a tote  or large handbag. For day trips or any travel it's a great idea and easy to stow away.

Prices range from $ 13-24

Michelle Dockery at the Golden Globes - Makeup by Chanel

Makeup Artist Jordan B. Long did Downton Abbey's Michelle Dockery's makeup for Sunday's Golden Globes.

I think Michelle looked smashing and loved her Alexandre Vaulthier dress as well.

Many of the new Chanel Spring shades were used on Michelle including my current favorite blush, Frivole  and the fabulous Volume de Chanel Mascara. Read on for all the details:

INSPIRATION: Modern and sexy with Old Hollywood Glamour. Michelle is in period costume 60 percent of the time so to try something new we wanted to do a smoky eye, some high fashion and some tousled hair to highlight her new cut.

SKINCARE: I started with Chanel Hydra Beauty Serum and followed with Le Blanc de Chanel Sheer Illuminating Base all over the face with a foundation brush.

FOUNDATION: I lightly stippled Chanel Vitalumière Moisture-Rich Radiance Sunscreen Fluid Makeup Broad Spectrum SPF 15. Michele’s skin is so flawless - so we love to let that show through.

BLUSH: After a light dusting of translucent powder, I applied Chanel Powder Blush in Frivole to the apples o her cheeks. Michelle loves her skin to show through and I love to use highlighters and to keep her complexion dewy, so the Poudre Signée de Chanel Illuminating Powder was perfect on her cheekbones, down her nose and above her lip and her chin for brightening.

EYES: We wanted to do a smoky eye. Michelle’s character in Downton Abbey wears next to nothing, so we decided early on to go for it. Since she's wearing white and gold with burgundy shoes we wanted something warm. I used Chanel Quadra Eyeshadow in Raffinement. I applied the dark burgundy brown all over the lid. Then blending up towards the browbone, but leaving some space.

I then added Chanel Illusion D'Ombre Long Wear Luminous Eyeshadow in Apparence at the center, blending the colors together. I love burgundy and gold. Michelle has a lot of reddish tones in the color of her eyes so we wanted to highlight that. We finished with a very fine line on upper lash line of Chanel Long-Lasting Eyeliner in Noir Intense.

MASCARA: I used three coats of Le Volume de Chanel Mascara in Noir. We also added extra coats on Michelle's extra-long gorgeous lower lashes for extreme fluttery lashes.

LIPS: We wanted a very natural, nudish glossy lip. Michelle has a lot of pigment in her lips naturally, so against her pale gorgeous milky skin doing too nude doesn’t work, so we used a lipstick with a slight color: Chanel Rouge Allure Luminous Intense Lip Colour in Sedusicante with no liner and then with a gold gloss, Chanel Rouge Allure Pure Shine Intense Colour Long Wear Lip Gloss in Attirance.

Stila Color Balm Lipstick

Stila joins the tinted lip balm lineup with new Color Balm Lipstick. And while there may be a lot of tinted balms out there these days, personally I can't get enough and am happy to see more . I remember years ago lamenting the lack of tinted balms ,  not anymore.

Stila's is a bit different in that it's richly pigmented. Some of the tinted balms are but most are not.  The shade shown is Spicy Red- Natasha,  which applies like a full red lipstick. I love a fully tinted balm so this part is good.

There is some moisture here but not as much as I expected.  It's decent but not a lot . Enough for most days but in the coldest temps  I think it wouldn't be enough. Ingredients include castor seed,  jojoba and peppermint oils. The peppermint gives the balm  a mint scent/taste that feels very zingy.

The finish starts out with a bit of a   gloss but sets to a more semi satin look. That "set" makes for a long lasting lipstick though. After several hours and some drinking it wore down to a stain almost, color still there but not as fully.

I do love the packaging here , as each tube has a mirror on the top for on the go application. Shouldn't all lippies come with that ?And the Stila lettering color corresponds to the shade inside.

There are 18 shades from rose to red.

$22 at www.stilacosmetics.com   and Sephora

Downton Abbey Inspired Hair Jewels

After the season premiere of Downton Abbey and the parade of gorgeous hair jewels , I was inspired/resolved to get some more of my own. I have a few nice ones with rhinestones both clear and colored  but Lady Mary's feather made me want to see what else I could source. That feather was EPIC. Agree?

The first place I thought to head was France Luxe. Purveyor of a huge number of hair accessories.

Naturally the I click on rhinestone choice and the loveliest I see are $200-400. Really. And really -no. Thankfully they have a sale section and plenty of lower priced items.

The  L'Erickson Fern Tigi Boule reminded me  of that Downton Feather. It's $62, then at Nordstrom I spied this Tasha Crystal Feather Hair Clip  and their Vintage Feather Clip , both $ 38 . These feathers look like winners.

If you want something to channel the Laurel Wreath tiara from  the wedding scene , how about this Goddess Tiara also from L'Erickson  at $21  . I know, how many tiara wearing occasions are there ? Maybe that means we need to make more of them up.

Over at Scunci's site they have a lovely colored stone barrette clip. No price and I haven't seen it in  my stores but all their products are generally inexpensive  , usually under $10.

Have any of you got Downton accessory fever ? The combination of being set in 1920 now and a crack costume department are making this season , so far , sartorially splendid.

Unfortunately I've stumbled upon  season 3 spoilers, so while I can't wait to watch more,  fellow fans, look out.

Sephora + Pantone Universe Emerald Color Byte Lip Wands

The color of the year in case you haven't heard is Emerald. I am so good with this. I love emerald green and green in general. And for the most part it loves me.

The new Sephora+ Pantone Universe Collection will launch in March and there is a huge product assortment for all your green needs.

One super cool set is this Colorbyte Lip Wands. When I saw Lip Wands I did not think they were  in this type of tube. Are these not  some of the cutest lip glosses? I love that each one is a Pantone chip cube with a cap at the bottom.

The set has four glosses, all very pretty and very wearable. The pigment on the coral/peach shade- Georgia Peach is the deepest. It's medium coverage with Crocus and Cameo Brown being a little lighter.  The Touch Of Emerald shade is  basically clear with a little greenish yellow glitter. It looks fine on, not green, just shimmery. The Peach shows a little more coral in the photos than it is. It's more of a deep peach.

I wear a good bit of green eyeshadow and when I do it's usually a nude lip or a peachy coral one. These colors are spot on with what looks good with green

The Colorbyte Lip Wand set is $ 24 for the set of 4.  You can sign up at  Sephora   to be notified when the line is on sale.
